Origin of the festival
According to Gyuhapchongseo (the first home encyclopedia of the Joseon Dynasty), while Taejo Lee Seong-Gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, was on his way to visit Muhakdaesa (the distinguished monk)
who was staying at Manilsa (temple) in Mt. Hoemun in Gurim-myeon, Sunchang-gun, which was built during King Mu's reign (AD 673, Baekje Dynasty) in the late Goryeo Period, he had the most delicious lunch of Gochujang ever in a neighboring village. Because he missed the hot pepper paste so much after he became the first King of the Joseon Dynasty, it was presented to him at the table.
Sunchang has a rich natural environment (annual average temperature: 13.2?; fog: 77 days; humidity: 72%) perfect for fermenting fungus including Gochujang, malts and Ganjang because of the climatic features, Gangcheon mountain and the clean water of Seomjin River. Soybean sauces have developed here from times long past because these climate characteristics are perfect for the growth of aspergilli. As a mecca of the soybean sauce industry as well as the driving force for the present local economic growth, Sunchang is well-placed as the host of the Sunchang Soybean Sauce Festival.
