Sunchang-Gun is renowned for both the longevity of its residents and its soybean sauces, and was known as 'Okcheon" and 'Osan' during the Mahan period.
Sunchang was named "Sunhwa“during the Silla Dynasty and "Sunchanghyeon" in the Goryeo Dynasty. It was elevated from a Hyeon to Gun from when the Buddhist monk Jeongdo, who hailed from Sunchang, took the honorable duty of Monk of the State in 1319 (1st year of King Chungsuk's reign).
