- The forested or farmed area is 331㎢, accounting for 67% of the entire county. The region is well equipped with a natural environment suitable for wild animal and plants. The rivers are well developed with rich aquatic life. The region is home to 30 kinds of mammals, 9 kinds of amphibians, 10 kinds of reptiles, 600 kinds of insect species, 30 kinds of fishes and 1,200 plants. It is estimated that about 10,000 species live in Sunchang area as the numbers above were based on a rough survey only.
- Rare species such as hedgehogs, wildcats, crakes, mandarin fish and Korean aucha perch currently require protection. But the abundance of moss that is found in all areas demonstrates that these areas are not affected by air pollution.
- Sunchang is located on the upper reaches of Seomjin River. Sunchang has an abundant supply water with a total length of 224km of 25 major watercourses (national level-1, local class 1-1, local class 2-23) and 433km of 353 minor water courses.
