Gangcheonsan Gunrip Park


As Korea's first Gunrip Park designated in 1981, Mt. Gangcheon has been called, 'Mt. Geumgang in Honam' due to its thick forest, clean water and refreshing valley.
Rumor has it that the name 'Gangcheonsan' originated from Gangcheonsa (temple).

Transportation

  • Location: Paldeok-myeon, Sunchang-gun, Jeollabuk-do
  • Distance: 8.7km from Sunchang Bus Terminal
  • How long: 15 minutes (by car)
  • Bus schedule: 11 times a day at Sunchang Bus Terminal 09:10 - 18:00 every 40-50 minutes (one-way ticket: KRW 1,000)

Mountain Hiking Course

Six hiking courses are available (3-7 hour walk, 5-12km)


Four Distinctive Seasons : Mt. Gangcheon offers a variety of fine views during all four seasons.

  • Byeongpung Waterfall
    A 40m-high and 15m-wide waterfall in Byeongpung Rock (5 tons of water per minute)
    A small waterfall (30m-high, 5m-wide) was revealed in 2002.

  • Gujanggun Waterfall
    The waterfall legend is that nine warriors were determined to die at war but ultimately won the war
    Namgeunseok (granite phallus), theme park, barefoot walk and resting area are available in front of the waterfall.
    A great place for student membership training and family trips

  • Cheonu Waterfall
    A beautiful natural waterfall in Songeumam (precipitous cliff)

  • Biryong Waterfall
    According to the legend of the magnificent Biryong Waterfall (50m-high), nine dragons flew up towards the sky along the cliff, which is why it was named Biryong Waterfall (flying dragon).

  • Yongmeori Waterfall
    Legend says that a dragon died when it was about to ascend to heaven after living on earth for a thousand years and its bloodstain remained

  • Yaksu Waterfall
    According to legend, this waterfall can cure disease

  • Hyeonsugyo
    The largest overpass (50m-high and 75m-long, built in 1980) in Honam


Bawi(Rock) in Mt. Gangcheon

  • Eomi Bawi: A married couple Bawi reminiscent of female sexuality
  • Georasi Bawi: Legend says that street beggars made an offering to a temple and prayed for good luck
  • Buk Bawi: Named because Undaebong (peak) in the middle of Mt. Sanseong looked like a Buk (drum)
  • Buddhist Bawi: 'Buddhist Bawi' is named because it looked like Buddha. It's also called, 'Gwaneumam'
  • Tugubong: 'Tugubong' is named for the mountain peak that looks like Tugu (a war helmet of Janggun (general)). It's also called, 'Janggun Bawi'.

Sujwagul

Legend says that two Zen masters (Seokdam and Noedam) cultivated their minds here and attained spiritual enlightenment.

Yongso

According to legend, a male dragon lived in the upper Yongso (Dragon Pool) while a female dragon lived in the lower Yongso. If the world got confused, a dragon cry was heard here.

Gujanggun

Theme Park
A broad and laidback park built in front of Gujanggun Waterfall. A total of 16 sculptures are displayed for visitors.

  • Barefoot

    Walk
    Visitors can walk along the precipitous cliff in the refreshing valley barefoot, enjoying pleasant chirping and flowing and the sweet scent of trees and wild flowers (Byeongpung Waterfall - Gujanggun Waterfall, 5km round trip).

  • Gangcheonsan

    Forest Bath
    Visitors can breathe fresh air and negative ions while walking along the wooden-fence walk (2km in round trip).


  • Geumseong

    Sanseong (Fortress)
    Korea's largest fortress built in 1380 (in the 6th reign of King U, Goryeo Period).

Samindae

(Tangible Cultural Property No. 27)
A monument house where 'Sunchang Governor Chungam Jeong Kim,' 'deputy governor of Damyang Nulje Sang Park' and 'Governor Muan Seokheon Ok Ryu' submitted a memorial to the throne to cancel the deposal of the queen.
